The Difference between Vision Insurance and Medical Insurance

Vision Insurance can only be used for routine eye exams. This gets you your eye health check and your glasses prescription - that’s it. It may come with discounts to use toward glasses or contact lenses. It does not cover anything else. Vision insurance cannot be billed for concerns such as dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma, floaters and flashers, Diabetic Reports, eye injuries, or any other health concerns or treatments. We do not currently accept any vision insurances; however, you are able to pay out of pocket for your eye exam, glasses, or contact lenses and then submit your receipt to your vision insurance company. They will reimburse you up to your plan’s allowance.

Medical Insurance is used for other types of appointments. Medical insurance usually does not cover routine eye exams, contact lenses, or glasses. Medical insurance can be billed for things like cataracts, glaucoma, floaters and flashers, Diabetic Reports, and eye injuries. A copay or deductible may be due at the time of the appointment.

Insurance can be tricky - your best bet is to call your employer or whoever administers your insurance plan and ask them what company your medical benefits are through, what types of eye-related appointments and procedures are covered, and what your deductible and copays are.

Payment for your appointment, treatment, glasses, and contacts is due at the time of service. You are responsible for paying anything your insurance does not cover.
